PTE-China.org (2007)

Helped PTE China, an organization that helps promote HIV/AIDS education in China, with the basic on-page search engine optimization of their website.

Trips With a Mission - Ghana, Africa (2005)

Assisted in the completion of a children’s home outside of Accra, Ghana. Had the opportunity to visit with local villagers and visit an orphanage in Accra. Needless to say, this was a life changing experience.

Mission Ministries - Juarez, Mexico (2007)

Constructed a home (in two days!) for a family in the “kilometers”section of Juarez, Mexico. Took part in a community outreach program as well. It was truly amazing, and somewhat distressing, to see the conditions people live in just 20 miles from the United States border.

Habitat for Humanity - Aurora, Colorado (2006)

Spent a day framing the second story of a home for a needy family…in a blizzard.

Denver Rescue Mission - Denver, Colorado (2004 - 2007)

Regularly volunteer to serve food to the homeless at the Denver Rescue Mission in Denver, Colorado.

Since 2003, James has studying and implementing search engine optimization (SEO) tactics to help increase traffic and revenue for his employers and clients. From taking InsureMe.com from a site that was nowhere to be found in Google to first page rankings, to increasing the world’s largest property web site’s organic search traffic 140% in three months - James knows what it takes to move a website from search engine obscurity to the top of the search results.

James SEO skills and tactics include:

On-page title tag, META tag and content optimization

SEO friendly content creation

Internal link sculpting

External link building

Indexing and duplicate content analysis and troubleshooting

Here are some examples of rankings achieved by two of James’ employers, InsureMe and Properazzi (now Enormo):

James started working with paid search engine marketing in 2003 when he started up InsureMe’s first Google AdWords account. While the project was started with a $100 a day budget, the massive return on investment lead to a rapid expansion of InsureMe’s paid search budget. Within months, James’s work with Google AdWords and Yahoo!’s Search Marketing platform (Overture) was contributing almost 20% of total lead volume to InsureMe with an annual budget over a million dollars.

While at InsureMe, James had the opportunity to build paid search accounts with hundreds to hundreds of thousands of keywords with:

Google AdWords (multiple accounts)

Yahoo! Search Marketing/Overture (multiple accounts including a Diamond level account)

MSN AdCenter (multiple accounts)

7Search

Quigo

LookSmart

and others…

James also does pay-per-click marketing consulting and implementation with Dr. Neil Cannon, a Denver based therapist who attributes a third of all of his new clients to James’ search engine marketing expertise.

After attending a blogging seminar put on by Internet veteran Dave Taylor, James realized that companies who were willing to use open channels of communication to their customers, business partners and even competitors could build relationships in ways never thought possible.

In 2005, James began a blogging initiative that quickly became a key part of InsureMe’s corporate culture. James created and became head writer of the InsureMe Affiliate Blog - a blog dedicated to helping online affiliates be more successful with their online marketing. Topics included tips and tools for search engine marketing; search engine related news and updates on the latest issues and trends in affiliate marketing.

The InsureMe Affiliate Blog received the Web Marketing Association Standard of Excellence Award in the categories of marketing and blogging in 2006 and 2007. Affiliate marketing expert Durk Price also recognized the blog as one of the top 10 affiliate marketing blogs of 2007.

In addition to his writing duties, James created and lead InsureMe’s blogging team, which was responsible of writing and promoting as many as three corporate blogs at one time.

Personally, James also authors Marketing Punk - a blog that focuses on life, blogging, and the world of marketing.

More and more companies are turning to online video to market their products, educate customers and help build buzz around their brand. James’ experiments with online video have ranged from the viral, to instructional to the outright absurd. Here’s a small sample of some of his work.

The Viral

After a close encounter with a wild bird on his way to work, James uploaded the video below to YouTube. Within a day the video was the #1 video on Digg.com, and the #1 video of the day in the Animals and Pets category on YouTube. The video has now pushed past the 300,000 views mark and was featured on CNN’s News to Me television program. Here’s the video - Danger Bird’s Ride.

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

And here is Danger Bird on CNN.

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

The Instructional

Video is a perfect channel to use for training and instructional content. At InsureMe.com, James was tasked with creating videos that could help affiliate marketers understand the complexities of InsureMe’s affiliate program. Here’s an example that clarifies InsureMe’s affiliate payout structure.

<param name="wmode" value="transparent" /You need to have flashplayer enabled to watch this Google video

The Absurd

Face it. Absurd, entertaining and downright silly videos work on the web. James has had the opportunity to flex his tendency for the absurd in some of his online videos. This one documents what happens when InsureMe’s CEO bets his hair that the company couldn’t meet its United Way donation goals.

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

Another slightly absurd video was created by James and his team to help announce a new feature to InsureMe’s insurance agents. (And if you’re wondering, that is James doing the ridiculous announcer’s voice).

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

If you’d like to see more of the videos James has written, filmed, edited and occasionally starred in, check out InsureMe’s YouTube channel.
